Book Review: Age Like A Girl

I first heard about Dr Mindy Pelz a few years ago when I was researching fasting – she wrote all the Fast Like a Girl Books. So when I heard her promoting her new book Age Like a Girl: How Menopause Rewires Your Brain for Mental Clarity, Increased Confidence, and Renewed Energy – I downloaded it almost immediately.

I absolutely loved everything about this book! It is not just another book about perimenopause/menopause. Pelz looks at the reason for menopause, she believes that the body never does anything without a purpose. Sure we know that menopause brings to an end a woman’s reproductive years but why? What is next? She also approaches this stage of life with positivity, excitement and hope rather than the end of something. She believes menopause is a chance for woman to come back to their true selves with energy and excitement.

While Dr Pelz is a qualified doctor she is a chiropractor and I know they can often be quite divisive. In line with that she takes a holistic look at the changes woman go through during their 40/50’s and beyond and offers natural solutions. She does not discount medicine, so this is not a hippy book that suggests you forage for food or suffer through the pain but rather she believes if we help ensure our bodies are functioning optimally, they will know what to do.

What I really liked about this book is that she breaks it down in a language that is easy to understand. She offers easily achievable suggestions – go for a 20 minute walk a few days a week, add sweet potatoes to our diet – there is no active pushing of a product or an unattainable schedule.

I have chosen to manage my symptoms naturally and some days I do question my decision but reading this book confirmed a lot of things for me and I know that my body knows what it needs to do – I just need to make sure it has what it needs to do that.

The audiobook had a PDF attached that is 103 pages long with meal plans, recipes, summaries of key points and so much more. And there is a chapter at the end of the book just for men – she summaries the book and offers suggestions of things men can do to help their partner. I love that she did this, it is so helpful for women who are struggle to explain things to their partner.

Like, The Menopause Brain, this is a must read book for all woman whatever your age! While I loved listening to the book as I walked, I definitely want to get a hard copy to keep for easy reference.

  1. Thanks for sharing. I will be forty in June and, although it’s not been confirmed, am pretty sure I’m in perimenopause. I’ll certainly check out this book.

  2. I’m glad you enjoyed the book. As I went through the menopause 8 years ago, I don’t think I’d get so much out of it. I do remember Run Like a Girl though.

  3. I haven’t heard of Age Like a Girl, but it sounds like a wonderful read for women of all ages. Thanks for the heads-up about it! I’m on the other side of menopause now and am so grateful to be here for many reasons. 🙂
