Cricut Project: DIY Glass Mug (for Newbies)
I have had my Cricut Joy for a while now. I LOVE my little machine but it did take me a while to figure her out. There is a lot online – videos and written tutorials but I still struggled to just get the basics right. So this series is for Cricut Joy newbies like I was.
I am going to break every step for you so you to can come to love your little Cricut Joy as much as I love mine.
Emma started a little business last year and so we started making these mugs. I started with a simple image in one colour before adding additional colours or doing the wrap around designs. I have since expanded to wrap around designs and even designed a few of my own. But we are going to start super simple today!
What you will need.
- Vinyl in the colour you want
- Transfer tape
- Cricut tools
- Cricut mat – if you are not using vinyl specifically for the Joy.

Login to Cricut Design Space. Type glass mug in the search bar and hit enter.

For your first project I suggest browsing existing projects. The main reason I suggest doing this is because someone else has already done the “hard work”. This makes it easier to start getting familiar with your machine.

I picked this one as one of my first projects. It was pretty simple but still pretty and we had the exact same glass mugs.
Most of the projects mention the products they used, dimensions and some instructions.
Don’t worry about the colour – you can use whatever colour vinyl you have.

For your first project, click Make It (we will work on Editing soon).
It will ask you to Without Mat or With Mat. If you have the Cricut Joy vinyl, you won’t need the mat as it fits perfectly into the machine. But if you bought vinyl for a bigger machine, you can cut it to fir your mat.

If you pick mat, it will ask you to confirm you have the right size mat.

Once you confirm, it will ask to confirm your design. Again don’t stress about the colour, use the colour of vinyl you have.

It will then connect to your device and ask you to confirm the material you are using.

Once you have clicked Vinyl, make sure your blade is in and then load your vinyl, the machine will measure it to make sure you have enough.
Then you can click GO and watch the magic start.
Unload it once it is done.
I cut the design out to save as much vinyl as I can, especially if the design is on the smaller side. Once you have done that you can pull back the outer part of the vinyl and start weeding.
Weeding is the process of removing unwanted material from a craft project, such as vinyl, iron-on, or infusible ink. It’s often necessary for intricate designs.
There isnt much weeding on this design – just the centre of the O.
Take your transfer tape, cut a piece to cover your design. Pull it off the backing and place over the design. Use your Cricut tool to press down and then slowly pull back – your design should come off onto the transfer tape.
Once this is done, place onto your clean glass and press gently but firmly. Then slowly start to pull the transfer tape off – leaving your design on the glass.

Such a simple design but so pretty!
