When we moved into this house 16 years ago the kitchen was fine, but we knew we wanted to redo it – there were too many cupboards and not enough counter space (the sink was nearly 3m long for goodness sakes). In hindsight we should have taken out a little more on the bond and redone it before or as we moved in, but we didn’t.
We tried over the years to make changes on a budget but it almost felt like it was getting worse at one stage. Our big renovation project was actually prompted by the second bathroom’s pipes needing to be replaced but we decided to do the kitchen properly once and for all.
I had been planning this moment for YEARS so knew exactly what I wanted. I found Milestone Kitchens a few years ago when we thought we might be able to do the kitchen. Before making the final decision I looked at so many other kitchen options but nothing made me feel the way the Milestone raw range did! I kept going back to it and I am so glad I did.
Basically you pick the pieces you want, measure them and send to the Milestone team (or you can ask them to help you figure it all out). There were two things that were non-negotiable – more counter space and a farm-style sink. We planned everything around that!
We have a little laundry area just off the kitchen, it just had the washing machine and chest freezer in but there as more space so we decided to add a double sink in there and just add the smaller farm-style sink in the main kitchen as a prep bowl of sorts. This meant we could get so much more counter space in the kitchen (again I remind you the sink we had was almost 3m long).
We also added a little bar style counter to the end of the kitchen, giving us even more counter space and creating a nice separation between the kitchen and dining room.
I am so in love with it. It has everything we wanted, the additional counter space is actually life changing. Jack and I have so much space now to bake and it is possible for more than one person to be in the kitchen at the same time.
The other big change was removing the oven and stove and replacing it with a gas stove and oven. Our old stove only had 2 working plates and it was a mission trying to cook so having 5 whole plates now feels like Christmas!
Out of the 5 areas we renovated, this was by far the most disruptive and stressful but the end results were so worth it. I don’t mind cooking dinner every night now and Jack has been baking up a storm.
It was without question worth the wait.
