Last year we didn’t really know what to do with Cameron’s birthday or the anniversary of his death. So we cried and retreated but then Kiara and I decided to do something this year for his birthday.
I planned a road trip for us that would end in Cape Town for his birthday. It was the best decision.
These days will always be hard, I know that, but I also want to try make them special and positive. To create new, special memories around Cameron’s birthday so that this day isn’t only sadness and loss.
We visited new towns and places we haven’t been to before, creating new memories in each one.
We climbed a mountain, found some boulders and a waterfall. Definitely a core memory.
We ate some unforgettable food – more than once.
We had a flat tyre in the middle for rural Northern Cape and then went down a pass covered in thick mist – with the tyre reminding us it needed help the whole way (it was safe to drive on and we found someone close by to help).
We had lunch with Kiara for Cameron’s birthday.
We just, simply had time together. Just us. Exploring, relaxing, laughing, remembering and creating new memories. It was just what I needed to give my sadness a soft place to rest for a bit.
.
I hope you have an MEMORABLE week!

I am joining up with the Word of the Week link party Check it out and join the part too!

How wonderful to make good and special memories to honour Cameron. The road trip sounds fantastic. Sending love and hugs.
That’s a lovely idea, making memories is so important and choosing to do so to remember Cameron even more so. It looks like you had an amazing trip, well, apart from the tyre.
That sounds like it was the perfect way to remember Cameron on his birthday. Creating new memories around the sadness sounds like it really helped.
I’m so glad you found something to do as a family to honour Cameron with for his birthday. Big love and hugs to you all x #wotw
Navigating birthdays and anniversaries is hard. I’m so glad that your road trip for Cameron’s birthday was a good decision and you were able to create some special memories and have special time together remembering Cameron, giving your sadness that soft place to rest while making some memories together too. We always have a birthday picnic for Jessica’s birthday and I make her a cake. It makes it a special event but gives that space for the sadness as well and I think it’s important to hold space for that sadness while also allowing moments of joy too. Sending a big hug your way and glad that you were able to find that space for remembering and creating new memories x
