David organises and attends about 10 events throughout the year – they are a range of fly-inns, rallies, symposiums and a few things in between. I seldom go with – not because I don’t support him but most of them are the whole weekend and they are work events for him, so he is busy the whole time. But I tagged along this weekend (mainly because there was no camping involved).
The event this weekend was the annual Bona Bona Fly In combined with the first Speed Rally of the season. It was held at the gorgeous Bona Bona Game Lodge near Wolmaransstad.
We left on Friday in cold, rainy, miserable weather which is not great flying weather but is great for a weekend away with no kids and nothing on the agenda. Despite having been there a few times, David picked the wrong route – we didn’t get lost but there were tons of stop streets along the way and the scenery was not very pretty. It was one of those drives that felt like it took forever.
By the time arrived the weather had started to clear and warm up (fortunately for the pilots, unfortunate for me and my plans of reading indoors all weekend).
Bona Bona is very rural which means there isn’t signal and their wifi only extends as far as the main buildings. Our gorgeous little room, had no signal – like we were on emergency calls only and no TV. We had no choice but to switch off completely while in the room which was actually really great.
Saturday was an absolutely perfect day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky the whole day which made for perfect flying conditions.
David worked most of the day so I did read a little bit, then worked on a new business idea Eve and I starting in the restaurant (where there was signal), then popped up to the airfield and then had a gorgeous little nap before dinner. It was the perfect day.
Even though David worked for most of the weekend and there were a lot of people around, it is always special to spend time with David.
The lodge is gorgeous and there isn’t much to do, you are forced to unwind, relax and connect – I was definitely not complaining. It is only 3 hours from Pretoria making it an easy weekend getaway. They have an on-site spa, game drives and a predator tour.
