Sunday Hike – Cannon Rocks Trail

We are now hiking people. Even before we arrived at our holiday destination I researched possible hiking trails. While there were lots of walks along the beach, there was only one official hiking trail near us. So obviously we had to do it – twice!

The trail starts at the little suburb of Cannon Rocks, it forms part of the great Addo Elephant Reserve. It winds through a coastal forest for the first 3.5km and then the trail does sort of disappear but once you climb a sand dune, you make your way to the coast line and walk the 3.5km back along the beach. We tried to find the trail the second time we went but it still does disappear into the dunes. But its very hard to get lost because you can follow the beach back but the trail is also on All Trails.

It isn’t flat with a few inclines but nothing too hectic. The climb up and over the dunes, however, is pretty tough but once you are back at the beach, its pretty flat.

You can take dogs but it is part of the reserve so you do need to watch out for small buck (apparently). So officially you need to keep dogs on lead. We took our dogs and while they loved it, they did get very hot, even though we did the first one pretty early.

If you are walking the trail in December, I would take water with – we started at 6 am and by the time we got onto the beach it was pretty hot and I certainly could have done with some water.

It is a beautiful walk with stunning views of the forest and the coastline.
