“There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.” Cameron Tucker
I am useless when it comes to remembering things that happen in TV shows and movies. This episode on Modern Family remains one of my absolute favourites because we often have this dreamers vs realist tug of war in our house. I am team realist but everyone else is team dreamers, so not really much of a tug of war, but being the mom does mean my input is weighted a bit more.
There is also another set of teams though – the doers and the planners.
Eve and I meet once a week for coffee. We talk about a lot in those weekly 2 hour sessions and if we go for a walk during the week, its a lot of talking. We know each other quite well now. Eve is a planner and I am a doer. Just like the dreamers and the realist, neither team is right. They both have a place.
The reason this has been on my mind is because we have been talking about Substack for a while now. We have been trying to decide do we start one, what do we share etc etc.

Eve has been planning.
I just started one.
Now on the surface it might sound like my way is better but it isn’t always. I started a Substack, wrote a few posts and then was like “Huh, what do I post now.” because I had no plan. I am an Aries, so we often do tend to rush in and just do before we think and sometimes it does work out for us, but often we find ourselves in the forest asking “which way now”.
The beauty of friendships like this, where you are on opposite teams, is that you learn from one another. I am trying to plan before just doing. I would like to emphasis trying because I don’t always get it right – sometimes doing is just easier, even when you have to deal with the consequences – like what to write about. But there is such value in planning – most notably, that there is a plan, you know where you are going and why. I think the challenge is to not get too caught up in the planning that you don’t ever do because you can plan something forever and never actually do it.
What are you a planner? A dreamer? A doer? A realist?
