Word of the Week – Recalibrate

Not only is this my word of the week but RECALIBRATE might just be my new favourite word.

What does it mean?

Recalibration is the process of readjusting, resetting, or fine-tuning an instrument, device, or plan to improve accuracy and ensure it functions correctly after drifting or changing. It involves re-evaluating settings or expectations to align with new information, ensuring precision in measurements or strategic goals.

I have been feeling weird lately – if I had to put a word to it, it would be uncomfortable – like something is changing but I am not 100% sure what! On my walk this week it came to me – I am recalibrating. Our life is changing – kids are getting older, more independent, we are getting more financially stable, our goals and plans are changing too.

It is almost the end of the term so I am assessing and recalibrating what worked and what didn’t.

Emma went off her ADHD meds but has decided she wants to go back off. I am recalibrating this information again.

We have had to recalibrate my HRTs again. I am really very much over this if I am honest. I just think we have it figured out then something happens and we have to adjust again.

We are recalibrating some finances to see if we can start on some much much needed home renovations.

I have been recalibrating my online space for a few years now and I think I am finally at the point where I have a little more direction.

  1. That’s a brilliant word and applies perfectly to this stage of life. I’ve been feeling similar for a while; I think it’s part of perimenopause.
I think as mums, those shifts and changes affect us on another level, our roles are changing as our kids become more independent, and it feels strange after the baby/toddler/pre-teen years.

  2. Recalibrate is a good word – we all have times when we need to do that. Good luck with all the various things that you are all recalibrating at the moment. I like the thought you shared – it is so important to make that space to hear yourself and decide what needs to happen for you to recalibrate. #WotW

  3. I think I’ve been recalibrating ever since I met you Laura, my life has been changing non stop since we moved to SA, with more moves, kids leaving home, job changes, becoming grandparents, bereavements, career changes, retirement etc, I’ve just not had more than year of life without change. I’d jsut like a bit of control over what is going on for a while. #wotw
